Economic Analysis: Headwinds Facing Recycling

The Chinese Sword, freight pricing and driver shortages are all impacting the economics of recycling. Nationals leaders in collection and recovery systems will discuss the challenges facing recycling and what this means for attempts to increase packaging recovery at the curbside.

It’s been two years since the Sustainable Packaging Coalition’s study: the Availability to Recycling Study, noted only 50% of the American public had easy access to recycling. Applying Sustainable Materials Management to Achieve State Recovery Goals 

State based recovery goals are often based on tonnage metrics but is this effective? As the recycling stream faces increased light-weighting, and the prevalence of food waste increases in the waste stream are there other metrics and strategies we need to consider to reach these goals? Dr. Tin Townsend will walk us through an assessment of four States looking at the trends and opportunities to apply sustainable materials management to develop a strategic and data driven approach to waste management.

Next Steps Towards Advancing the Value of Packaging in Reducing Food Waste

In 2018 AMERIPEN released a study quantifying the value of packaging as strategy to reduce food waste. The report noted a need for more data to better understand the opportunities to optimize packaging to ensure success in the fight against food waste. Panelists will discuss emerging research and next steps to advance the role of packaging as a valued strategy.
