AMERIPEN Webinar: Packaging’s Role in Minimizing Food Waste

Monday, October 15, 2018 | 8:30am PT/10:30am CT/11:30 ET

Speaker: Dr. Helen Williams

Moderator: Kyla Fisher (

In 2011 and 2018 Dr. Helen Williams of Karlstad University (Sweden) undertook consumer household studies of food waste to explore the role packaging plays in reducing food waste. These are the only academic studies explicitly exploring the linkage of consumer food waste to packaging. Her initial findings demonstrated an estimated 20-25% of household waste could be attributed to under-utilized or under-valued packaging. Since that initial study, Dr Williams has developed a global collaborative of researchers dedicated to exploring the research needs to evaluate and communicate the value of packaging in reducing food waste. The Packaging Saves Food Group includes collaborators from University of Michigan, across Europe and Australia. Collectively, they have outlined an aggressive vision for promoting the value of packaging in reducing food waste.

Join AMERIPEN in this one hour webinar as Dr. William outlines the results of her initial study, and provides preliminary updates based on the emerging data from the 2018 study. She will discuss how she amended her approach in 2018 to better capture the losses she saw with consumers who overlooked the value of packaging in its absence or when it performed well as identified in the original 2011 study. She will share insights for how this study could be replicated in the US. Dr. Williams will then conclude with a summary of her top priority areas for research on the value of packaging in preventing food waste.

This webinar is free for AMERIPEN members and TAG Group members. If you are interested in attending this webinar, please contact Katie Wallstein.
