"Quantifying the Value of Packaging as a Strategy to Prevent Food Waste in America"

On January 23, AMERIPEN released our latest report “Quantifying the Value of Packaging as a Strategy to Prevent Food Waste in America.” The report notes that packaging is a key strategy is the fight against food waste but is being underutilized as a preventative strategy. Exploring global data, AMERIPEN uncovered a surprising correlation between the foods and counties with the highest percentage of wastage and those with the least amount of packaging.

Where packaging has been cited as a strategy in the fight against food waste, investment and calls for action have focused on new technologies but AMERIPEN’s own assessment of industry professionals identified smaller and more targeted strategies to optimize design and reduce current damage rates might be more effective, suggesting the cost for using packaging as strategy may be overstated and the opportunity may be understated.

The report concluded by noting areas of further research and the need to integrate recycling policy with food waste policy in order to reduce unintended consequences.
AMERIPEN hopes this will be the beginning of more research and action towards recognizing the Value of Packaging as Strategy to Prevent Food Waste.

Committee Updates

Did you know AMERIPEN has launched two new member committees? We encourage you to sign up:

  1. Understanding Circular Economy and Sustainable Materials

Launched in November 2017, this committee seeks to explore the practical implementation of Circular Economy (CE) and Sustainable Materials Management (SMM) frameworks as they apply to packaging. A series of case studies will be developed exploring policies, material selection and programs in an attempt to help policy makers and industry understand how these can best applied to packaging across its lifecycle.

See AMERIPEN's White Paper on the subject for more information.

  2. Policy Implications for E-commerce Packaging

To be launched in February 2018 this committee will develop deeper analysis and case studies on the five opportunity areas identified in the 2017 AMERIPEN report: “Optimizing Packaging for an E-Commerce World. The intent will be to identify areas where we can identify policy opportunities in order to offer State legislators a proactive strategy to address ecommerce packaging.
