AMERIPEN Annual Meeting

May 30-June 1, 2018 | Washington, DC

Over 70 members, affiliates, policy makers and industry leaders gathered for the 2018 AMERIPEN Annual Meeting, May 30-June 1 in Washington DC.

Each year, AMERIPEN gathers to discuss issues of importance to our members and the packaging industry and to evaluate how we can best leverage our voice/resources to promote the value of sustainable packaging.

AMERIPEN is the only organization that brings together every stage of the packaging life-cycle to discuss public policy impacting packaging – raw material suppliers, converters, brand owners, waste and recycling providers, recycling facilities, local, state and federal recycling coordinators, regulators and policy makers.

The AMERIPEN 2018 Annual Meeting featured a packed agenda that hit the biggest topics facing the packaging industry today:

Global Challenges to the Recycling System AMERIPEN

  • We heard from leading experts on the challenges to the recycling system, including the impact of material restrictions into China, but also other countries including Vietnam
  • Our sister association, EUROPEN, discussed the historic challenges in the European Union as they try to balance an aggressive packaging recovery strategy against a restricted recycling environment.

Hearing from State & Local Government

  • As a public policy focused organization, our partners in state and local government are critical to AMERIPEN’s work.
  • We heard from state partners in Washington, Maryland and Connecticut about the intersection of packaging, policy and the environment.
  • And we learned about local challenges in Phoenix, Washington D.C.  and San Antonio

Hot Topics

  • AMERIPEN’s is diving into the industry’s hottest topics:
    • Examining the application of sustainable materials management to packaging design
    • Exploring what infrastructure and policy needs will be required to help companies realize their ambitious packaging recovery goals.
    • Reviewing an area where AMERIPEN is leading – explaining the value of packaging to address food waste.
  • Our Committees reviewed opportunities to address these critical areas:
    • Government Affairs discussed AMERIPEN’s leading role in key states like California, Michigan, Washington and Iowa and discussed new policy positions to help demonstrate AMERIPEN’s commitment to proactive policy solutions
    • Our Food Waste committee examined ways to leverage our industry-leading report on the Value of Packaging to Reduce Food Waste, and possible next steps
    • Our E-Commerce committee laid out plans for industry-leading research on the Value of Packaging in an E-Commerce Economy
    • Our new Membership & Communications Committee reviewed ways that we can amplify AMERIPEN’s voice on these critical issues

Your support of AMERIPEN is critical to our success. Together, we continue to lead public policy engagement and thoughtful science-based research for the entire U.S. packaging industry.  A few highlights from 2018 to share:

Leading on Public Policy

AMERIPEN’s focus is advancing positive public policy solutions to packaging issues.  We continue to lead by actively working in key states:

We’re working with stakeholders in Michigan, Maryland, Washington and Iowa as they evolve their solid waste laws and programs to address market challenges and work towards their future, environmentally sound materials management systems.

  • AMERIPEN played a strong role in Connecticut supporting recycling efficiencies during their Taskforce on Packaging that delivered a report to the Legislature this year.
  • Similarly, in California, AMERIPEN has stood up for positive policy solutions in the face of strong pushback from policy makers and others to consider more draconian options.
  • AMERIPEN joined forced with industry peers to call for increased funding for recycling infrastructure, to explore the need to integrate packaging and food waste policy and to address marine debris concerns in coastal states.

We continue to lead a successful coalition of fellow trade associations who participate as affiliate members of AMERIPEN so that we can increase our success with a unified industry voice.

Thoughtful Research & Effective Communications

  • In January 2018, AMERIPEN released seminal new research – the Value of Packaging in Reducing Food Waste.  This important work addresses criticisms of packaging head on and tells a clear story of the power of packaging to do good – by avoiding millions of dollars in food waste, while reducing overall environment impacts.
  • This fall, AMERIPEN will release a deep dive into waste optimization strategies in California, Maryland and Minnesota.
  • Building on our popular e-commerce and packaging white paper, AMERIPEN created a committee of key industry thought leaders to explore potential policy implications in this dynamic new area. This will provide us with an opportunity to get ahead of anticipated policy shifts.
  • Since our last annual meeting, AMERIPEN has been featured in, or presented at:
  • Waste Dive
  • Snack Food & Wholesale Bakery
  • Packaging Printing
  • PackWorld & Greener Packaging
  • Resource Recycling
  • Waste Management Sustainability Forum
  • FWRA Webinar
  • PIA RPPG Annual Meeting
  • Tag and Label Manufacturers Institute Annual Meeting
  • EPS Expo

The Board and staff of AMERIPEN are committed to providing its members and the packaging industry with the support needed to ensure on-going success, and we thank you for your continued membership and engagement.  Please contact me or any member of the Board or staff at any time with your questions or suggestions.  We look forward to the opportunity to continue serving you.
