Packaging and Marine Debris

Insights from an AMERIPEN-led Value Chain Stakeholder Dialogue

The 2019 AMERIPEN Salon Series is designed to bring together stakeholders from across the value chain to address current and emerging challenges to the continued success of the packaging industry. By bringing together leading experts on every aspect of packaging production and recovery, AMERIPEN members can come together to solve persistent problems and create new, promising opportunities.

This report summarizes insights from the September 2019 event held at the New York Aquarium in Brooklyn, NY.

Summary:

Discarded packaging in our marine environment is a misuse of valuable material. Packaging industry professionals have the power to introduce rationality into the discussion, as well as effect viable solutions. As is common with many challenges faced by the industry, solving the issue calls for collaboration across the supply chain. It will also require increased consumer outreach, dialogue with public policymakers, and investment in infrastructure and research and development. A proactive approach to dealing with marine plastic packaging pollution will empower packaging professionals to serve as thought leaders and help advance solutions.
