AMERIPEN represents the North American packaging value chain by providing public policy makers with fact-based, material-neutral, scientific information. AMERIPEN is the only organization exclusively focused on U.S. public policy for the entire packaging industry. We advocate on behalf of the entire packaging value chain – from material producers, to brand owners, to recycling partners – before state legislatures and collaborate with stakeholders to advance the packaging industry’s public policy objectives. Our mission is to lead the packaging industry through advocacy based on science and enhance understanding of the role packaging plays in a more sustainable society, economy and environment.

Position Description


Basic Purpose

Drives implementation of the strategies of AMERIPEN as directed by the Board and the overall membership. Serves as the face of AMERIPEN to external audiences to promote AMERIPEN as the voice of the industry on issues related to packaging and the environment.

Key Roles & Responsibilities


  • Works with the Board of Directors to develop organizational strategy and leads strategy execution.
  • Coordinates formation of project teams as assigned by the Board and oversee project portfolio to ensure adequate progress. Assures team outputs are delivered in a material-neutral way with the good of the greater packaging value-chain in mind, using data and sound scientific principles.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Serves as the public face of AMERIPEN, including responding to media requests, speaking at industry events, leading external collaborations and issues management, and engaging the Board and other Members as needed.
  • Facilitates collaboration with related industry trade associations, government agencies, NGOs and academic organizations as needed to further the agenda of AMERIPEN.


  • Develops and manages a membership growth strategy that includes retention of current members and identification of new members by communicating AMERIPEN value proposition to create diverse representation of the packaging value chain within the membership.

Administrative & Contractor Coordination

  • Primary administrative duties of AMERIPEN will be handled by a trade association management resource. The Executive Director will be responsible for guiding the management company and maintaining that relationship – including managing and executing an RFP for alternative resources, if necessary. The Executive Director will oversee additional services provided by contractors as needed.

Demonstrated experience in trade associations with an understanding of how to interface with relevant stakeholders. Proven ability to develop and maintain collaborative partnerships. Familiarity with packaging and environmental issues preferred.

Demonstrated ability to manage teams, influence others, and drive decisions on key issues.

Communication Skills

Demonstrated ability to communicate association strategies, priorities, and direction to internal and external audiences. 


Fiscal & Strategic Long-Range Plans

Active engagement with AMERIPEN Board in fiscal and strategic planning and ownership of plan delivery.

Management of Direct Reports

Supervise the work of all employees, consultants or contractors engaged by AMERIPEN. No direct staff anticipated at this time; however, significant growth in AMERIPEN membership may require development of a staff in the future. It is expected that the Executive Director will be able to grow into that role, if needed.

Financial Accountabilities

Manage budget as directed by the Board, with oversight of the management of administrative spending, project costs, consultant expenses as well as lobbying costs.

Travel Requirements

May travel up to 20% of time.


Degree Level/Work Experience

Bachelor’s Degree and relevant work experience.

US Based


Additional Experience

Trade association experience (direct or indirect).

Familiarity with public affairs.
